Albertans head to the polls on Monday, October 19, 2026, to vote in the provincial referendum. Here is where and when you can vote, what to bring, and what to expect, based on information published by Elections Alberta.

Key dates

  • Advance voting: Tuesday, October 13 to Saturday, October 17. You can use any advance voting location within your electoral division.

  • Vote by mail (special ballot): the deadline to request a package was September 25. Completed packages must reach Elections Alberta by 5 p.m. on Friday, October 16.

  • Election Day: Monday, October 19, with voting places open from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Find your voting place

Elections Alberta's Where to Vote tool (map.elections.ab.ca) uses your physical residential address to show your assigned Election Day voting place, your advance voting locations and your local returning office. Where to Vote cards are also being mailed out beginning in late September. You can get the same information by calling Elections Alberta at 1-877-422-VOTE (1-877-422-8683).

On Election Day you must vote at the location assigned to you. During advance voting you can go to any advance location in your electoral division.

Who can vote

To vote you must be a Canadian citizen, at least 18 years old on Election Day, and ordinarily resident in Alberta. You do not have to be registered before you arrive. You can register at an advance voting location in your division or at your assigned Election Day voting place. Being registered at your current address ahead of time generally makes things faster, and you can check or update your information through Elections Alberta's Voterlink system.

What to bring

Everyone voting in person has to prove their identity and current physical address. There are two ways to do that:

  • One piece of government-issued photo ID showing your full legal name, current physical address and photo. A current Alberta driver's licence or ID card works. A Canadian passport cannot be used on its own because the address is handwritten.

  • Two pieces of ID that both show your full name, with at least one showing your current physical address. More than 50 forms of ID are accepted, including utility bills, leases and student ID.

Attestation forms are available for some situations, including people in long-term care or supportive living, student housing, and people living on a colony, First Nation or Metis Settlement. The form has to be completed before you go to vote.

If you are voting by mail

If you already have a special ballot package, you need to include a signed declaration and a copy of your accepted ID. Do not send original ID. Completed packages have to be returned by mail, and they cannot be dropped off. Canada Post recommends mailing within Alberta by Friday, October 9, and Elections Alberta must receive your package by 5 p.m. on Friday, October 16. If a special ballot is rejected, you can still vote in person during advance voting or on Election Day.

What is on the ballot

There are 10 questions. Each one is on its own numbered, colour-coded ballot for in-person voting. Question 10 is a choice between two options, and Questions 1 through 9 are yes-or-no questions. The results of Question 10 and Questions 1 through 5 are not binding, and Questions 6 through 9 are constitutional questions. Elections Alberta cannot interpret the questions. For questions about their meaning, contact the Government of Alberta or your MLA. The full wording is on the Elections Alberta website.

After the polls close

Advance votes and special ballots begin being counted at 5 p.m. on October 19, and Election Day ballots are counted after voting ends at 8 p.m. Ballots are counted by hand. Unofficial results are posted by question as counts are completed, the unofficial count must be finished within 48 hours of the polls closing, and the official announcement of results is scheduled for October 29 at 10 a.m.

Details can change, so confirm your voting location and hours at elections.ab.ca or by calling 1-877-422-8683 before you head out.
