Forty-six years ago today, Calgary welcomed a new NHL era. On October 9, 1980, the Calgary Flames played their first regular-season game after moving from Atlanta, finishing in a 5–5 tie with the Quebec Nordiques at the Stampede Corral.

From Atlanta to Calgary

The franchise arrived in Alberta after eight seasons as the Atlanta Flames. Its move in 1980 gave Calgary an NHL team and set the stage for an enduring place in the province’s sporting culture.

The opening night result was a draw, but its historical significance went well beyond the scoreboard: the Flames had begun their regular-season story in Calgary.

The date was October 9, 1980. The opponent was the Quebec Nordiques. The venue was the Stampede Corral, and both teams scored five goals.
