Saturday, October 3, 2026 — Rogers Place, Edmonton

The Edmonton Oilers did what Alberta hockey nights are supposed to look like when the clock gets thin: they refused to settle for a tie. Final score at Rogers Place — Oilers 3, Seattle Kraken 1 — after Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid stacked late third-period goals and sent the home crowd home happy.

This is the result Alberta Radio held for. Preview chatter and early updates are fine. The column that matters is the one stamped FINAL.

How it unfolded

Undrafted forward Owen Michaels opened the scoring 2:51 into the first, his second of the young season, with Alex Formenton picking up the helper. Edmonton controlled the early frame; Seattle spent too much of it killing penalties and chasing.

The Kraken finally answered. Bobby McMann tied it 1–1 at 9:06 of the second, with Jordan Eberle and Chandler Stephenson on the assists. From there the game sat on a knife edge — the kind of night that rewards whoever still has gas when the third period gets ugly.

Edmonton still had gas.

With 2:27 left in regulation, a broken play in the Seattle end caromed off McDavid and found Draisaitl in front. He buried it — his third of the campaign — and Rogers Place exhaled. McDavid then iced it with an empty-netter at 1:05 remaining, assisted by Vasily Podkolzin. McDavid finished with a goal and an assist, good for nine points through three games. That is not a hot streak you shrug at.

Devon Levi stopped 19 for the win. Seattle's Philipp Grubauer made 22 saves in a loss that will sting more for how late it arrived.

Standings snapshot

Oilers move to 2-0-1. Kraken sit 1-1-0. Edmonton continues to own this matchup in Alberta — according to reports heading into the night, the Oilers' all-time home ledger against Seattle has been a one-way street, and Saturday extended the pattern.

Why it matters here

Hockey is not soft news in this province. It is economic pulse, civic pride, and Saturday night TV all at once. When the Oilers grind out a late win at home, it lands from Fort McMurray to Lethbridge the same way a pipeline announcement does — people talk. Alberta Radio covers the politics and the pumps; we also cover the barn when the result is real.

Credit Michaels for the early strike. Credit Draisaitl for the dagger. Credit McDavid for refusing to leave points on the table. That is the standard Edmonton sells tickets on.

What's next

Seattle opens at home Sunday against the Calgary Flames. Edmonton heads to Anaheim to face the Ducks on Wednesday — a first-round rematch on the schedule that will test whether this early pace is real or just October noise.

For now, the ledger is simple: Oilers 3, Kraken 1. Final. Alberta gets the W.
