Flames 0-3: Kraken Bury Calgary 6-1 Again in Seattle - Alberta Radio by Jason LaFace

Three games, three losses, three goals scored. The Calgary Flames were buried early again Sunday night, falling 6-1 to the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena. It is the second 6-1 beating Seattle has handed Calgary in four days, and the Flames are 0-3-0 to open the season.

Over before it started

Seattle scored three times in the first eight minutes. Berkly Catton opened it at 2:22 off a 3-on-2 rush, skating into a loose puck in the high slot and beating Dustin Wolf glove side. Mackie Samoskevich made it 2-0 at 4:40 on a partial breakaway after a long flip pass from Brandon Montour, and Bobby McMann snapped home a bouncing puck at 7:40.

Calgary had looks in the second. Morgan Frost was stopped twice from in tight and Adam Klapka was denied on a wraparound. Instead, Shane Wright made it 4-0 at 11:58 and Samoskevich scored his second of the night at 19:34. Frost broke Joey Daccord's shutout on the power play at 14:25 of the third, tapping in a Matvei Gridin feed, and Jordan Eberle answered 39 seconds later for the 6-1 final.

By the numbers

Calgary actually outshot Seattle 33-27, won 54.1 per cent of the faceoffs and outhit the Kraken 29-21. None of it mattered. Daccord made 32 saves, Wolf gave up six goals on 27 shots, and Seattle blocked 22 Calgary shots. Mikael Backlund and Matt Coronato had five shots apiece, and Martin Pospisil threw eight hits. Joel Farabee picked up an assist in his 500th career game, and Kevin Bahl played his 300th.

Add it up and the Flames have been outscored 16-3 through three games: 6-1 and 6-1 against Seattle, with a 4-1 loss in Vancouver in between.

The room's read

"I feel like right now we're disconnected," head coach Ryan Huska said. "You get yourself a little bit of momentum, things start going the right way, and one person goes off script right now for us and it seems to end up in the back of our net."

Frost put it plainly: "I feel like one mistake is just leading to another, and we're letting it pile up on us." Farabee was blunter still. "Nobody's coming to save us, so we've got to do it together, and we've got the guys to do it."

The take

Farabee has it right. Nobody is coming to save this team, not a trade, not a call-up, not a lucky bounce. The underlying numbers on Sunday weren't terrible. The mistakes were, and the goaltending behind them couldn't cover for them. Three games is no verdict on a season, but it is a warning, and it lands with Calgary fans who are already wondering what exactly this group is building toward.

The good news is the Flames finally get to go home. Calgary hosts the Colorado Avalanche on Thursday at 7 p.m. MT at the Scotiabank Saddledome, the first of two straight home games. A Saddledome crowd will be patient for about one period. After that, this team has to give it something to cheer.
