East Village Homicide: CPS Needs Your Eyes on This Pair

A man is dead, the guy who stabbed him walked away before the first cruiser showed up, and as of Sunday morning nobody is in handcuffs. Calgary's homicide detectives have done the sensible thing: they've put faces out to the public. Now it's on us.

What happened on Seventh Avenue
Around 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2, Calgary Police Service officers were called to the 500 block of Seventh Avenue S.E. in the East Village for a report of an assault involving a weapon. Investigators believe two men who knew each other got into a physical fight. During that fight, one man pulled a knife and stabbed the other.
The victim was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition and died of his injuries. The suspect fled before police arrived and remains at large. Police have not publicly named the victim, and an autopsy is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 6.
Two faces, one ask
After talking to witnesses and going through CCTV footage from the area, the Homicide Unit released photos of a man and a woman believed to be connected to the killing. Police have not said what role either person played, only that they want them identified to move the file forward. No arrests had been announced as of Sunday morning.
"This was a brazen act of violence that claimed a person's life," said Staff Sgt. Mark Rahn of the CPS Homicide Unit. "We are working to determine exactly what happened and are asking anyone with information to come forward."
Why this one matters
This wasn't a back alley at 3 a.m. It was early evening on a busy stretch of downtown Calgary, a few blocks from the new library, the condo towers and the event district this city has spent a fortune promoting. Families walk this area, and people who live and work there are entitled to expect that a knife fight at suppertime ends with somebody in custody.
Calgarians have watched downtown safety become a running argument at city hall for years, with plenty of strategies and press conferences and not nearly enough results on the sidewalk. Credit where it's due: CPS moved within a day to get images out instead of sitting on them. That's how cases like this get solved, not by hashtags or task-force branding, but by ordinary people who recognize a face and pick up the phone.
If you were in the East Village Friday evening, check your phone. Check your dashcam. Check your doorbell camera. One clip or one name could be the difference between an arrest and a cold file.
