ALBERTA RADIO | Alberta Morning Forecast | Thursday, October 8, 2026 | All temperatures in °C; times in MDT

Alberta wakes up to a sharp north–south weather divide. Rain is moving into the northern half of the province, with Grande Prairie forecast to reach just 7°C, while Medicine Hat heads toward 21°C. Edmonton and Leduc should see rain develop early this afternoon, while Calgary has a mainly sunny day ahead.

The bigger story comes after today: Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for a developing late-week system that could bring accumulating snow and deteriorating holiday travel conditions. Thursday's mild southern temperatures should not be taken as a guide to the weekend.

Today's Alberta weather: ten-community forecast

The table uses Environment and Climate Change Canada's forecasts issued at 5:00 a.m. MDT on October 8. Highs are today's forecast maximums; lows are for tonight, October 8 into October 9. They are forecasts, not current thermometer readings.

Edmonton and Leduc: plan for a wet afternoon

Edmonton's cloudy morning carries a 30% chance of showers before steadier rain begins early this afternoon. The high is 13°C. Rain continues tonight, with 5–10 mm forecast and a low of 8°C. The official Blatchford observation was about 8°C at 8:00 a.m.; sky conditions were not reported at that station.

Leduc also reaches 13°C, with early showers giving way to cloud and another morning shower risk before afternoon rain. Tonight brings 5–10 mm, with rain easing overnight and a low of 7°C. Keep a rain layer handy for the afternoon commute.

Calgary and Red Deer: different sides of the corridor

Calgary has the brighter forecast: mainly sunny skies, a high of 18°C, and a UV index of 2. A few clouds tonight become more extensive after midnight, with a low of 9°C. The city is nevertheless included in the special weather statement for the upcoming change.

Red Deer is mainly cloudy with a 30% chance of showers and a high of 14°C. A shower chance lingers early this evening before temperatures fall to 4°C. The latest morning forecast is used here rather than the previous afternoon's outlook.

Fort McMurray and Grande Prairie: northern rain moves in

Fort McMurray becomes cloudy this morning, with rain expected to begin late this afternoon. The high is 11°C, followed by a low of 5°C and 5–10 mm of rain tonight. Friday's forecast adds 10–20 mm of rain and afternoon northeast gusts up to 60 km/h.

Grande Prairie is the coolest daytime stop in this report. Rain brings 5–10 mm today, a high of 7°C, and another 5–10 mm tonight. Northeast winds strengthen this evening to 20 km/h, gusting to 40, as temperatures settle near 4°C. Friday is forecast to turn rougher: rain changes to wet snow in the afternoon, temperatures fall toward zero, and gusts could reach 70 km/h.

High River, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Brooks: milder today

High River reaches 19°C with sunshine and cloud. Tonight's low is 9°C, with cloud increasing after midnight and southwest winds developing this evening at 20 km/h, gusting to 40. Friday may bring stronger gusts before a pronounced weekend cool-down.

Lethbridge reaches 20°C under a mix of sun and cloud. Tonight drops to 9°C, with increasing cloud after midnight and evening southwest gusts to 40 km/h. Its Friday forecast reaches 22°C but includes afternoon gusts to 70 km/h; Saturday's high falls to just 4°C.

Medicine Hat has the warmest forecast of the ten communities, at 21°C. Sunshine and cloud give way to increasing overnight cloud, with a low of 10°C and evening southwest gusts to 40 km/h. Friday's high of 25°C is followed by a much cooler 7°C on Saturday.

Brooks reaches 17°C with sun and cloud, then falls to 10°C tonight as cloud increases after midnight. Evening southwest winds gust to 40 km/h. A special weather statement is posted for the County of Newell area near Brooks, Rosemary and Duchess.

Special weather statements: watch the weekend travel outlook

Environment Canada's October 8 morning statement flags the first accumulating snow of the season for parts of Alberta. Rain spreads across northern areas today, with a transition to snow in west-central areas Friday and more broadly by Saturday. The Calgary–Edmonton corridor could be affected, but snowfall amounts outside the western region remain uncertain.

The largest potential accumulations are identified around Grande Cache, Hinton and Jasper National Park, where totals could exceed 20 cm. That is not a snowfall forecast for every city in this report. The system is expected to ease from north to south Sunday.

Statement coverage includes Edmonton, Leduc, Grande Prairie, Red Deer, Calgary, High River and the Brooks area among the regions listed in the bulletin. Check your precise location for new or revised alerts; this article is a morning snapshot rather than a live alert feed.

Before you head out

For today, rain gear matters most in northern and central Alberta. Southern communities have a milder afternoon, followed by strengthening winds in several locations tonight and Friday. For weekend travel, check the latest local forecast and road conditions before departure, allow extra time if conditions deteriorate, and be ready to adjust your route.
