Crime

Maskwacis — charges laid in September shooting. RCMP have charged Justin Standingontheroad, 19, of Maskwacis after a Sept. 22 shooting on the Montana First Nation that followed an altercation between two people known to each other. Charges include aggravated assault, discharging a firearm with intent, weapons offences and failing to comply with release conditions. The victim is recovering. He's remanded and due in court Oct. 15. None of it has been proven in court.

Piikani Nation — $72,000 in stolen goods recovered. Piikani RCMP found a jet ski and trailer reported stolen from Cardston, then searched a shipping container and recovered a dirt bike, generators, a coin-operated washer and dryer from Pincher Creek, and tools taken in Lethbridge. Adam Filipcic, 37, of Claresholm, faces four counts of possession of property obtained by crime and is wanted on a warrant. He may be driving a silver 2010 VW Jetta or a 2001 Dodge Ram painted black. If you're missing tools, call Piikani RCMP at 403-965-2001.

Calgary — 92-year-old struck downtown. Calgary police say a stranger hit a 92-year-old woman in the face while she walked downtown with a friend. Juliana Isabella Bodor, 59, is charged with assault and is due in court today. Anyone who'd do that to a senior on a sidewalk ought to face the full weight of the law.

Politics

Kenney wants a "reckoning." At yesterday's Edmonton Chamber event with Rachel Notley, Jason Kenney said separatists have infiltrated the UCP and that after the vote the party must choose its federalist roots and show them the door. Notley called the independence movement "a small tail" on the dog and said Albertans are being "held hostage." Think about that: a former conservative premier and a former NDP premier, together, telling a quarter of Albertans they don't belong in the conversation. Grassroots members built the UCP, and they'll decide who stays in it.

Advance polls draw lineups. Elections Alberta opened 311 advance polls, with lines of 40 or more at some Edmonton sites and 17 locations opening late because of technology issues. About 658,000 Albertans requested mail ballots, roughly 11 times the 2023 level, and about 60 per cent were back by Monday. Nenshi voted in Calgary and warned that separatists "will crawl over broken glass to vote." He's right about one thing: motivated voters show up. Advance voting runs to Saturday, and Question 10 gets counted first on Oct. 19.

Smith votes later this week. The premier's office says Danielle Smith will cast her ballot at an advance poll later this week and will vote to stay in Canada.

Calgary zoning fight continues. The province has told Calgary to keep its blanket-rezoning repeal in place and preserve low-density rules while a broader review continues. Mayor Jeromy Farkas is still calling the intervention illegal. Council already repealed the policy in August; the province is telling city hall to listen to the neighbourhoods that asked for it.

Entertainment

LitFest opens tonight at the Citadel's Rice Theatre in Edmonton with Alberta-raised author Trina Moyles discussing her memoir Black Bear. The festival runs to Oct. 18.

Also in Edmonton tonight: The Zolas at the Starlite Room and Scottish comic Danny Bhoy at the Horowitz Theatre.

In Calgary, UB40 plays the Grey Eagle Event Centre, and Branford Marsalis and Dianne Reeves celebrate John Coltrane's centennial at the Werklund Centre.

Sports

Flames 4, Ducks 2 — finally. Martin Pospisil broke a 2-2 tie late in the third, Yegor Sharangovich hit the empty net, and Calgary got its first win of the season, ending the worst start in franchise history. Aydar Suniev had a goal and an assist, Adam Klapka scored, and Dustin Wolf held the fort. The Flames are 1-5.

Oilers 4, Kings 1. Connor McDavid had a four-point night, including a goal and two assists in a three-goal first period, and Levi made 39 saves as Edmonton won its fifth straight to go 5-0-1.

Elks can lock up first. Edmonton (12-4) hosts Winnipeg Friday; a win clinches first in the West and a home Western Final.

Stamps on the brink. Calgary (8-9) hosts B.C. Saturday and needs a win plus a Saskatchewan loss to Montreal to stay alive.

WHL: Red Deer rolled over Calgary 8-5 and blanked Edmonton 4-0, then hosts Victoria Friday and visits the Hitmen Saturday.
