Crime
Siksika Nation — teen's death ruled suspicious. A 17-year-old was found dead outside a home on Siksika Nation on Oct. 9. RCMP Major Crimes has taken the file and is treating the death as suspicious. An autopsy is scheduled today in Calgary, and police say there is no risk to the public. Our thoughts are with the family and the community.
Mundare — 18 charges after a truck chase with gunfire. Bonnyville's Kobi Rosichuk, 30, faces 18 charges after police say he fired at another pickup during a Sept. 29 pursuit near Mundare. Nobody was hurt. EPS's Air1 helicopter helped track him down, and he remains in custody. The charges haven't been tested in court.
Atikameg — Mountie in court tomorrow. RCMP Const. Tyler Bell, charged by ASIRT with assault with a weapon and breach of trust over the use of a less-lethal baton launcher in Atikameg in September 2025, appears in Slave Lake court Oct. 14. Accountability has to cut both ways, and that's the point of the process.
Heads up, Lloydminster. Saskatchewan RCMP are looking for Jeremiah Sokwaypnace, 19, after an armed attempt to steal a truck on Oct. 9. Police believe he may be heading toward Lloydminster and may be armed and dangerous. Don't approach him. Call police.
Politics
Advance voting is open. Advance polls for the referendum run today through Oct. 17 at about 310 locations, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., with 10 questions on the ballot. Mail-in ballots are due by 5 p.m. Oct. 16. Separation results are expected Oct. 20, with official results Oct. 29. Elections Alberta is bracing for record turnout. That's what happens when ordinary Albertans finally get asked.
Kenney and Notley, together again. Former premiers Jason Kenney and Rachel Notley are holding a joint remain event at the Edmonton Chamber of Commerce today. Two people who spent years telling us the other would ruin the province now share a stage to tell us the status quo is fine. Voters can weigh how much that endorsement is worth.
Smith: one shot only. Premier Danielle Smith says that if remain wins, there will be no second referendum "as long as I'm premier." That raises the stakes on every ballot cast this week.
Farkas calls zoning changes "a sham." Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas says the province's zoning changes are illegal overreach and "a sham." Expect the municipal-provincial fight to outlast the referendum.
Dueling price tags. The Alberta Transition Council pegs one-time independence costs at about $5 billion and projects yearly surpluses of $22 to $32 billion. A University of Calgary report done for the province puts the five-year cost at $50 to $170 billion. With oil near US$100, Albertans can read both and decide for themselves which side has done the homework.
Entertainment
NorthwestFEARfest runs Oct. 14 to 18 at the Garneau Theatre in Edmonton, a week of horror on the big screen.
Dark Phoenix, a new book on Danielle Smith's rise to the premier's office, is out just in time for the vote.
SCREAM hits the Edmonton EXPO Centre Oct. 30 and 31 with Tiësto, Alesso, Chase & Status and Sara Landry.
In Calgary, the CUFF 12-hour horror marathon runs Oct. 24 and 25 at Globe Cinema, and K-pop fans get Jammy Con at WinSport Oct. 31 to Nov. 1.
Sports
Flames 0-5, worst start in franchise history. Calgary is the only NHL team without a point after a 4-2 loss to Anaheim, and has been outscored 27-8. Bright spot: Aydar Suniev scored his first NHL goal. They get the Ducks again tonight in Anaheim.
Oilers in L.A. tonight. Edmonton visits the Kings around 8:30 p.m. MT after a 3-1 win in San Jose. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Zach Hyman are banged up, and Frederik Andersen is out until about Dec. 30.
Elks clinch a home playoff game. Edmonton beat Hamilton 27-12 to go 12-4 and lock up playoff football at Commonwealth.
Stamps still sweating. Calgary fell 33-28 in Winnipeg and hasn't clinched a playoff spot yet.
