Here's what moved since the morning book — crime, politics, sports and weather.

Crime Across Alberta

Rocky View County — Calgary man charged in luxury-home break-ins. Cochrane RCMP say Matthew Grouette, 39, of Calgary faces six charges after break-ins at luxury homes in Rocky View County. Investigation launched Sept. 23; CPS helped recover vehicles and arrested him Oct. 1 driving another stolen vehicle. Charges: three counts break, enter and theft; motor vehicle theft; possession of property obtained by crime; flight from a peace officer. Remanded; next appearance Oct. 6 in Cochrane. Three stolen vehicles recovered.

Red Deer — RCMP officer acquitted. Const. Eli Ndatuje, 39, was found not guilty Friday in Red Deer Court of King's Bench on all Criminal Code and Security of Information Act charges. Crown alleged a 2022 database search while stationed in Red Deer was shared with Rwanda's High Commission; Justice Jason Wilkins said the circumstantial case left reasonable doubt. CBC updated Saturday.

Hussar — CNRL gas-plant fire; worker airlifted. Fire at CNRL's Hussar gas plant ~85 km east of Calgary broke out ~5:45 a.m. Friday; extinguished by ~3:30 p.m. STARS airlifted a man in his seventies to Foothills in life-threatening condition; another worker treated on scene. Wheatland County issued a 3-km evacuation. Not in this morning's roundup.

East Village homicide — still no arrests. CBC Calgary reported Saturday that CPS still has no arrests in Friday night's fatal East Village stabbing (500 block of 7th Ave. S.E.; case CA26452863/4786). Tips: 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers.

Olds / Mountain View — diesel theft still open. Olds RCMP still seek the public's help after a significant diesel theft overnight Sept. 23 at Westview Co-op Cardlock (approx. 3:00–3:30 a.m.). CCTV: triple-axle tanker, red-and-white chassis, red hood/doors, white fenders and tank. CBC/Global recirculated related Calgary-area diesel-theft coverage midday Saturday.

Alberta Politics

Gas-tax pause, pump spike anyway. CTV Calgary reports that one day after Alberta suspended collection of its provincial gasoline tax, prices at some Calgary stations jumped more than 30 cents a litre. Tax holidays make for good press; wholesalers and retailers set the sticker.

Ellis and Chinatown release dropoffs. Edmonton Journal's Keith Gerein (Oct. 3) presses Public Safety Minister Mike Ellis after videos showed correctional officers dropping released inmates onto Edmonton Chinatown streets at night. Ellis vowed better "warm handoffs" but called the filmed cases "human error" — Gerein and Alberta Municipalities' Dylan Bressey say the pattern looks systemic.

That's the midday book. Hockey tonight, pumps are a reminder that tax theatre isn't the whole sticker, and Rocky View's break-in file just got a name. Stay loud.
