Alberta Gas Prices: 30 Cents Off in Two Weeks (Oct 5, 2026) - Alberta Radio by Jason LaFace

Two weeks ago, the typical litre of regular in Calgary and Edmonton cost about $1.78. This Monday morning it's closer to $1.48. The provincial fuel-tax pause explains roughly 13 cents of that. The rest is the market doing what markets do when nobody's propping prices up.

The big two

Calgary's average sat at 151.5 cents a litre across about 280 stations early Monday, with a median of 148. That's down about three cents from Sunday's 154.4. The cheapest board in the city was 135 cents, posted at a 7-Eleven on 24 Street S.E. and matched by four other stations, including spots on Douglaswoods Drive, Midlake Boulevard and Macleod Trail S.E.

Edmonton averaged 150.1 cents across about 262 stations, with a median of 147, also roughly three cents lower than Sunday. The capital's floor actually rose overnight, though. The cheapest regular was 141 cents at an Esso on 34 Avenue and a Petro-Canada on 118 Avenue, up from 138 on Sunday.

The Costco ladder

Alberta's 18 Costco gas bars averaged 147.1 cents for regular, down from about 149.2 on Sunday and 26 cents below the national Costco average of 173.1. The cheapest warehouse pumps were in south Calgary and at Tsuut'ina, both at 135.9 cents.

Outside the big two, it's a different story. Medicine Hat's Costco was the priciest in the province at 159.9 cents. Lethbridge and Grande Prairie sat at 157.9, Okotoks at 154.9, Red Deer and Sherwood Park at 149.9, Rocky View at 147.9 and St. Albert at 146.9. Edmonton's warehouses ranged from 142.9 to 148.9, with Nisku at 143.9.

Diesel is the sore spot. The two Alberta Costcos selling it averaged 216.4 cents, with Grande Prairie the cheaper of the two at 212.9 and east Calgary at 219.9. Warehouse diesel is up about 25 cents over the past month, which hits farmers, truckers and anyone hauling goods north.

We couldn't verify a city average for Fort McMurray this morning, so check your local boards there.

Wait or fill?

City trackers in both Calgary and Edmonton are flagging Tuesday as the low point of the weekly cycle. They expect about eight cents of relief in Calgary and six in Edmonton over the next few days if the pattern holds. Seven-day averages are still falling in both cities, and Edmonton rack prices were flat over the past five days. Crude is still near US$96 a barrel, so nothing's guaranteed.

For perspective, the cheapest regular tracked in Toronto Monday was 168.9 cents, Winnipeg 162 and Vancouver 194. Albertans hunting the cheapest pumps are paying roughly 27 to 59 cents a litre less than drivers in those cities at the bottom of their boards.

The take

Every cent the province stops taking at the pump stays in a family's pocket, and the numbers this week show the pause is actually reaching drivers. But the bigger story is competition. Twenty-cent spreads inside the same city tell you who's sharpening their pencil and who's counting on you not to look. Shop the independents, fill on the dip, and remember that cheap fuel is one of the best things about living in a province that produces it.
