Alberta Gas Prices: Sunday Wait Signal (Oct 4, 2026) - Alberta Radio by Jason LaFace

Three days into Alberta's provincial fuel-tax pause -- about 13c a litre off the sticker, on paper -- Sunday's board is less about celebration and more about timing. Live city trackers say fill-up-or-wait models are pointing at Tuesday for double-digit drops in Calgary and Edmonton. That is the Sunday signal. The pumps still belong to retailers and wholesalers, not the legislature.

Sunday, October 4, 2026 -- province-wide pump survey

The headline numbers

As of this morning's live pulls, Calgary averaged about 154.4c/L regular across roughly 286 stations (median ~150c) -- a touch softer than Saturday's ~154.6c city average. Edmonton held near 153.0c/L across about 261 stations (median ~148c), flat versus yesterday's city-wide picture.

Shop the floor and the map still rewards patience. Tracked cheapest regular in Calgary sat at 135.0c/L (7-Eleven on 24 Street S.E. and matching posts). Edmonton bottomed near 138.0c/L at a Canco / One Stop on 109 Street N.W. -- a few cents under Saturday's ~141c Edmonton floor. Same metros, twenty-cent spreads. That is competition, not a press release.

Costco climbed while city floors held

Membership pumps remain the bargain ladder -- but the warehouse network moved overnight. Alberta Costco regular now averages about 149.2c/L province-wide (up from roughly 145.3c in Saturday's survey). Cheapest warehouse is still SW Calgary / Tsuut'ina at 135.9c. Medicine Hat Costco remains the priciest at 159.9c -- about 24c above that south-Calgary floor.

Corridor and hinterland snapshot from today's Costco board: Red Deer 149.9c (up from ~144.9c Saturday), Lethbridge 157.9c, Grande Prairie 157.9c, Okotoks 154.9c, Rocky View 151.9c, Edmonton-area warehouses clustered roughly 142.9-148.9c. Diesel at the few Alberta Costcos selling it still runs north of 212c/L, with Grande Prairie among the cheaper diesel posts on the short list.

Why Sunday says wait -- and why the tax pause still doesn't freeze boards

City fill-up models this morning flagged Wait until Tuesday, with expected drops on the order of about 11-12c/L in Edmonton and Calgary if the weekly cycle holds. Seven-day averages were already falling. That is a market signal, not a guarantee -- rack prices and weekend demand still move the board faster than any one-day tax theatre.

The provincial pause took effect Thursday, Oct. 1, shaving roughly 13c/L while prices stay under the province's threshold. Saturday reports still noted some Calgary stations jumping hard the day after the holiday. Sunday's lesson is the same: the holiday helps the average; it does not erase neighbourhood spreads, freight once you leave the Edmonton-Calgary corridor, or warehouse moves when membership clubs reset.

What drivers should take from today

- Calgary / Edmonton averages: ~154.4c and ~153.0c regular (Sunday morning).

- Cheapest tracked opens: Calgary ~135c, Edmonton ~138c.

- Costco ladder: 135.9c Tsuut'ina / south Calgary up to 159.9c Medicine Hat; provincial Costco average ~149.2c (up vs Saturday).

- South & north: Lethbridge and Grande Prairie warehouses sit mid-to-high teens above Calgary's Costco floor; Red Deer Costco climbed about five cents overnight.

- Fort McMurray: no verified city average or Costco post in today's live pulls -- treat local boards as the authority.

- Sunday signal: according to reports, wait-until-Tuesday models are calling for double-digit relief if the weekly cycle holds -- shop the independents either way.

Fill where the independents and clubs compete. Ignore the ribbon-cutting. Alberta Radio will keep logging the province-wide board as the tax pause settles -- and as Sunday's wait signal either pays off or dies on the rack.
