Alberta Gas Prices: Tax Pause vs Reality (Oct 3, 2026)
Alberta paused its provincial fuel tax on Oct. 1 -- about 13c a litre off the sticker, on paper. Two days later, drivers still need a map, not a press release.

Saturday, October 3, 2026 -- province-wide pump survey
This is Alberta Radio's dedicated Saturday snapshot of what pumps are actually posting across the province. Midday coverage already flagged a Calgary spike after the holiday; this survey is the full province-wide look.
The headline numbers
Live aggregator averages for regular gasoline this afternoon put Edmonton around 153.0c/L and Calgary around 154.6c/L -- Calgary up about eight-tenths of a cent on the day, Edmonton essentially flat. That is the city-wide picture, not the cheapest corner store.
Shop around and the floor drops hard. Tracked cheapest regular in Calgary was 135.0c/L at a Petro-Canada on Sunpark Drive S.E.; Edmonton bottomed out near 141.0c/L at Canadian Tire Gas+ on Stony Plain Road and matching Esso and Petro-Canada posts. Same metro, twenty-cent spreads -- that is the open market doing what politicians' talking points do not.
Warehouse clubs and the provincial Costco map
Membership pumps remain the clearest bargain ladder. Across Alberta Costco fuel centres, regular averaged about 145.3c/L today, with the cheapest warehouses in south Calgary and on Tsuut'ina Nation land at 135.9c/L. Red Deer Costco sat near 144.9c; Edmonton-area Costcos clustered around 142.9-146.9c.
Head south and east and the membership sticker climbs: Lethbridge Costco 155.9c, Grande Prairie Costco 157.9c, Medicine Hat Costco 159.9c -- the highest Costco regular in the provincial network on this snapshot, about 24c above Calgary's cheapest warehouse. Okotoks and Rocky View Costcos were mid-pack near 146.9c. Diesel at the few Alberta Costcos selling it was north of 216c/L, with Grande Prairie the cheapest of that short list.
Why the tax holiday did not flatten the map
The provincial pause took effect Thursday, Oct. 1, shaving roughly 13c/L off gasoline while prices stay under the province's threshold. Reports this week also noted the $100 Energy Rebate application window extended to Oct. 31. Fine. Then Saturday reports out of Calgary said some stations jumped more than 30c a litre the day after the pause -- wholesalers and retailers, not the legislature, still set the board.
Carbon politics and rack prices move faster than a one-day tax theatre. Alberta refiners feed an open Prairie market; Calgary and Edmonton usually run among the cheapest big-city pumps in the country precisely because of that. The holiday helps the average. It does not freeze every neighbourhood pump, and it does not erase freight costs once you leave the Edmonton-Calgary corridor.
What drivers should take from today
- Calgary / Edmonton averages: ~154.6c and ~153.0c regular.
- Cheapest tracked opens: Calgary ~135c, Edmonton ~141c.
- Costco ladder: 135.9c south Calgary / Tsuut'ina up to 159.9c Medicine Hat.
- South & north: Lethbridge and Grande Prairie warehouse prices sit mid-to-high teens above Calgary's floor.
- Fort McMurray: no verified city average landed in today's live pulls -- treat local boards as the authority until community trackers refresh.
Fill where the independents and clubs compete. Ignore the ribbon-cutting. Alberta Radio will keep logging the province-wide board as the tax pause settles -- or as retailers claw the cents back.
