Here's your Saturday check on Alberta gas prices. Calgary is averaging 167.9¢ a litre for regular and Edmonton is at 163.2¢, with the cheapest stations at 147¢ in Calgary and 141¢ in Edmonton. Below is where things stand as of 10:15 a.m. MT, and whether it pays to fill up now or wait.

Calgary

Calgary drivers are reporting an average of 167.9¢ a litre across 288 stations, with a median of 169¢. That's up 1.0¢ from Tuesday's midday 166.9¢, our last update, so most Calgary stations are still well above the cheapest pumps. The lowest price in town is 147¢ at Costco (both gas bars), 12901 and 12905 Buffalo Run Blvd. GasBuddy's Calgary average was 167.6¢ as of late this morning, down about 1¢ from its previous reading.

Fill up or wait? Wait if you can. The tracker expects a drop of about 3¢ a litre by Monday. The weekly price cycle takes about 2¢ off and the 7-day average is falling, down 1.1¢ against the 21-day trend.

Edmonton

Edmonton drivers are reporting an average of 163.2¢ a litre across 252 stations, with a median of 166¢. That's up 5.9¢ from Tuesday's midday 157.3¢, our last update. The lowest price in town is 141¢ at Esso, 16002 114 Ave NW. GasBuddy's Edmonton average was 158.6¢ as of late this morning, down about 1¢ from its previous reading.

Fill up or wait? Wait if you can. The tracker expects a drop of about 10¢ a litre by Monday. The weekly price cycle takes about 7¢ off and the 7-day average is falling, down 2.7¢ against the 21-day trend.

Airdrie

Airdrie is running higher than the big cities, averaging 173.8¢ a litre across 18 stations, up 10.0¢ from Tuesday's 163.8¢. The best deal right now is 166¢ at Mobil on 1050 Yankee Valley Rd SE, followed by Petro-Canada 7-Eleven at 800 Yankee Valley Blvd SW (170¢) and Mobil at 300 Veterans Blvd NE (171¢). Several Shell stations are at 171¢. UFA on Highland Park Blvd NE last reported 164¢, but that report is from Friday morning, so check before you make the drive.

Outlook

Both local trackers say hold off if your tank can wait. CheapGasCalgary.ca expects Calgary prices to fall about 3¢ by Monday, and CheapGasEdmonton.ca expects a bigger drop in Edmonton, about 10¢. Gas Wizard, from Canadians for Affordable Energy, forecast 141.9¢ for Calgary today (down 3¢) and 140.9¢ for Edmonton (down 1¢). Those are forecasts, not pump readings, and they're more than 20¢ below what drivers are actually reporting today, so take them with a grain of salt. WTI crude is sitting around $96.24 US a barrel, and the Edmonton rack (wholesale) price has been flat over the past five days, so the trackers are reading this as the normal weekly cycle rather than a supply shock.

For context, CAA's national average for regular is 178.8¢ a litre today, compared with 180.5¢ yesterday and 180.4¢ a week ago, so Alberta drivers are still paying well below the Canadian average.

The fuel tax holiday

Alberta's 13¢-a-litre provincial fuel tax holiday started Oct. 1 and runs through Dec. 31. On Wednesday evening, Sept. 30, the night before it kicked in, Calgary averaged 161.0¢ and Edmonton 162.0¢. Today Calgary is 6.9¢ higher and Edmonton is 1.2¢ higher than that. Both city averages are now above where they sat before the tax cut, so for now the savings are at the cheapest stations.
