Here's your Tuesday check on Alberta gas prices. Calgary is averaging 166.9¢ a litre for regular and Edmonton is at 157.3¢, with the cheapest stations at 135¢ in Calgary and 140¢ in Edmonton. Below is where things stand as of 12:25 p.m. MT, and whether it pays to fill up now or wait.

Calgary

Calgary drivers are reporting an average of 166.9¢ a litre across 288 stations, with a median of 173¢. That's up 11.4¢ from yesterday's midday 155.5¢, the classic Tuesday price jump. The median was 150¢ yesterday, so more than half of Calgary stations are now at 173¢ or higher. The lowest price in town is 135¢ at Mobil / Esso, 15915 Macleod Trail SE.

Fill up or wait? Wait if you can. The tracker expects a drop of about 4¢ a litre by Thursday. Prices are falling on the weekly trend, with the 7-day average 7.8¢ below the 21-day trend, even though the Tuesday-Wednesday cycle is adding about 4¢ right now. Fill up at one of the stations still holding near 135¢ to 138¢ if you can't wait.

Edmonton

Edmonton drivers are reporting an average of 157.3¢ a litre across 267 stations, with a median of 152¢. That's up 5.7¢ from yesterday's midday 151.6¢, when the median was 148¢. The lowest price in town is 140¢, a four-way tie between Esso at 16002 114 Ave NW, an independent station at 14035 Victoria Trail NW, Tempo at 10415 158 Ave NW, and True Values at 5724 19A Ave NW in Mill Woods.

Fill up or wait? Wait if you can. The tracker expects a drop of about 3¢ a litre by Thursday. The 7-day average is 8.2¢ below the 21-day trend, while the Tuesday-Wednesday cycle is adding about 5¢ right now.

Airdrie

Airdrie is sitting between Calgary and Edmonton, averaging 163.8¢ a litre across 18 stations, up 7.3¢ from yesterday's 156.5¢. The best deal right now is 152¢, shared by Co-op at 301-1 Midtown Blvd SW, Mobil at 1050 Yankee Valley Rd SE, Mobil at 300 Veterans Blvd NE, Shell at 401 Coopers Blvd SW, and Shell at 529 2nd Ave SE. UFA on Highland Park Blvd NE is close behind at 153¢, but many Airdrie stations have jumped to 171¢ to 173¢, including Gas Plus on Airdrie Rd, which led the town at 150¢ yesterday. Shop around before you fill.

Outlook

Monday's trackers pointed to a cheaper Tuesday, but the weekly price hike landed instead. Both local trackers still say hold off if your tank can wait: CheapGasCalgary.ca expects Calgary prices to fall about 4¢ by Thursday, and CheapGasEdmonton.ca expects Edmonton to drop about 3¢. WTI crude is sitting around $96.16 US a barrel, and the Edmonton rack (wholesale) price is flat over the past five days, so the trackers put today's jump down to the usual weekly cycle.

For context, CAA's national average for regular is 178.0¢ a litre today, compared with 177.8¢ yesterday and 179.3¢ a week ago, so Alberta drivers are still paying well below the Canadian average.

The fuel tax holiday

Alberta's 13¢-a-litre provincial fuel tax holiday started Oct. 1 and runs through Dec. 31. On Wednesday evening, Sept. 30, the night before it kicked in, Calgary averaged 161.0¢ and Edmonton 162.0¢. Today Calgary is 5.9¢ higher and Edmonton is 4.7¢ lower than that. Calgary's Tuesday jump has pushed the city average above where it sat before the tax cut, so for now the savings are at the cheapest stations.
